| LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION "As a mother of an 18 year old, unmarried daughter I knew the birth of her baby could potentially be a stressful time for her. My daughter was adopted, so even though I was going to be with her during labor and delivery, I had never given birth and had no first hand experience to share with her. I wanted so badly for the birth to be a positive and healthy experience for her and the baby, but I couldn’t help feeling ill equipped for the task. I started searching on-line for information on getting assistance during labor and delivery -- and I was thrilled to find that there were individuals who specialized in this kind of support. They are refered to as a “Doulas”. In my search for a Doula, I came across Kelly Martin. She was a God Send! She provided my daughter with helpful information on what to expect during delivery, prior to the “big day”. She was also there to answer our questions and concerns as the first signs of labor set in. At the hospital, she was present the entire time, making sure she was comfortable and suggesting techniques that proved to be incredibly helpful as the labor progressed. Kelly was extremely flexible and my daughter was free to choose to have as little or as much coaching as she desired, at any given time. Kelly’s knowledge, experience and genuine caring were greatly appreciated. The birth proved to be an extremely positive experience for my daughter…and for me, too! "Giving birth is kind of like driving a car with the cruise control on -- it keeps going on its own, but someone still needs to guide the car in the right direction. A good doula like Kelly, helps with the steering so you don't feel like you're going to lose control and crash. Without my asking, she seemed to know what I needed, even before I felt like I needed it. Speaking as someone who has now had three babies, with two of the births attended by doula, and one (the first) without such assistance, it felt much more natural to have an experienced woman like Kelly to come and offer guidance. I was a lot more relaxed and the whole experience was what I envisioned a traditional water birth to be. Unlike my first birth, I needed no medical intervention! It is human nature to seek to have an experienced woman accompany us, who stay with us throughout labor and birth, to be a consistent and supportive presence while medical personnel come and go. As for recommending Kelly personally as a doula, she made me feel confident during the birth. She had the experience to help me through my birth with no medication, which is exactly what a laboring mother needs.
