What does the name "Madriella" mean?
The name Madriella is Latin and it means:
How long has Madriella been Certifying Doulas?
The program began in 2006, as a Doula Certification Continuing Education Class that was offered at Golden State Massage School, a school of Massage Therapy in Turlock, California.

Why does it cost so little? Other Doula certification programs are much more expensive?
The program is kept as inexpensive as possible in order to encourage women
to pursue becoming a Doula. Many of the women taking the course are already
experienced Doulas who have decided in the past, for one reason or another,
to allow their Certification lapse, and now are exploring recertification.
This program is convenient and easy and accommodates different learning styles.
The program begins with the student's academic learning online, and is then
followed with hands-on workship skills training held in their
local community which is led by an approved Madriella Workshop Facilitator.
If I am already a Certified Doula, Can I take this course for CEU's?
The NCBTMB recognizes the Massage for the Laboring Woman course as a
6-hour continuing education course for Massage Therapists through the
Somatic Health Institute. Each individual agency determines whether or not
a course, or training is eligible for CEU's. There is no blanket approval for
Continuing Education Units in trainings. However, know that Madriella's
online Doula Workshop, as well as the Hands-on Workshop are open to
anyone who would like to become a Certified Doula.
Is my Certification good everywhere?
Yes, the Madriella Certification is good in all fifty states. Remember that
Doulas are not medical professionals, they are non-medical in nature and
therefore, are not regulated by any licensing boards.
ANY WOMAN can be a doula.
How long does it take to get my Certification?
The online portion of the program is self-paced. All ten of the modules must be
completed before certification can be awarded. At the end of each module is
an online test that must be passed with 70% percentage. There have
been students who have finished the entire program in two-weeks,
others take longer. The program is entirely self-paced. Onceyou are enrolled
there is no time-limit and you can take as long as you want to finish the program.
Does my Certification expire?
At the current time Certification does not expire. Once you know how to
support a woman during birth you know it forever and there is no formal
recertification process yet. Recertification process will be installed at some time
in the future, when updates to medical procedures in birth require it.
At that time, all currently certified Madriella doulas will be notified of
the recertification procedures.
How do Doulas get paid?
Most Doulas are self-employed and are paid by the mother, or the
mother’s family. Some are employed by Hospitals and Birthing Centers,
and they are paid as any other employee would be.
Do I have to have given birth myself to be a Doula?
Madriella does no discriminate against women that have not, or can not
have children. Neither do they discriminate against men.
Madriella does not require all applicants to be mothers themselves,
but traditionally Doulas that have given birth themselves carry more
credibility, and are able to better encourage women that are
experiencing pregnancy, labor and birth.
